Newton man pleads guilty to 2012 strangulation death of 18-month-old girl in car seat

NEWTON, Kansas — A Kansas man has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the strangulation death of an 18-month-old girl.

The Wichita Eagle reports ( ) 21-year-old Jason Bugner of Newton has changed his plea in the 2012 death of Farrah Pendland, the daughter of his girlfriend at the time.

Authorities say Bugner fastened the girl into a car seat by only its top buckles and placed it on the edge of a futon mattress before he went into another room. They say Bugner later found the car seat partially overturned and the toddler suspended with the car seat strap around her neck.

He originally pleaded not guilty in July.

Bugner faces up to 11 years and four months in prison when he is sentenced in January.
