Police say driver in fatal collision with elderly pedestrian was under the influence

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico — Police in Albuquerque have arrested a man accused of fatally striking an elderly woman with his car.

Police spokesman Simon Drobik says 27-year-old Jesse Lopez was booked Friday on one count of vehicular homicide while driving under the influence.

Drobik says a 911 caller reported that a transient knocked on Lopez's car window because Lopez appeared to be asleep while waiting at a traffic light.

Lopez then allegedly drove eastbound in westbound traffic lanes on Gibson Boulevard near San Mateo.

Drobik says he hit 65-year-old Margaret Peralta as she was crossing the street.

Firefighters pronounced her dead at the scene.

It was not known Saturday if Lopez had an attorney.
