Passengers on the Richardson Highway may hear and feel blasts coming from Fort Wainwright

JUNEAU, Alaska — Passengers on the Richardson Highway may hear blasts and even feel vibrations for a few days in May.

Soldiers at Fort Wainwright will be training with 155mm howitzers on May 7-10 and May 14 -17 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Training will take place at the fort's Small Arms Complex, which is located right along the Richardson Highway. Those living near the complex may also hear and feel the explosions.

The howitzer shoots a 155mm shell which explodes on impact, according to John Pennell, chief of media relations for U.S. Army Alaska.

The secondary explosion is particular loud — it is even stronger than the sound that occurs from the weapon's discharge.
