LAWRENCEVEILLE, Georgia — Gwinnett County fire officials say a child who was playing with a lighter on a balcony likely started a blaze that severely damaged an apartment building in Lawrenceville.

Fire officials said in a statement that no injuries were reported after a fire tore through an Arium at Sweetwater Apartments complex building Friday afternoon.

Gwinnett County fire spokesman Tommy Rutledge says the fire appears to have started on the balcony of a third-floor apartment and the child was home alone at the time. Fire officials say the blaze appears to have been accidental and charges aren't expected to be filed.

Officials say 21 units were affected by the fire. Footage from local television stations showed portions of the building's burned out roof had collapsed, exposing the charred interior of several units.
