Lake Pontchartrain Causeway accident sends 1 of 4 involved vehicles into lake; driver rescued

NEW ORLEANS — A four-car accident on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway sent one car catapulting into the lake.

The causeway's manager says the lone occupant of that car was rescued by emergency workers and appeared to be in good shape. No serious injuries have been reported so far in the Thursday afternoon accident. Other details on the accident and what caused it were not immediately available.

The accident happened in the southbound lanes of the 24-mile-long bridge that links Jefferson and St. Tammany parishes. The southbound lanes were closed while workers removed the vehicle from the water. Authorities say both lanes of traffic were reopened to traffic shortly before 5 p.m.
