WOBURN, Massachusetts — A Massachusetts man who authorities say sexually abused a girl over a span of seven years beginning when she was 5 has been convicted of aggravated child rape and faces up to life in prison.

Fifty-nine-year-old Thomas Bergeron of Burlington was convicted Wednesday after a three-day trial in Superior Court in Woburn. Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 21.

District Attorney Marian Ryan says Bergeron baby-sat the girl after school and during overnight visits to his home. Ryan says the abuse began in 2003 with inappropriate touching and escalated to sexual contact. Ryan says Bergeron threatened to hurt people the girl knew if she told anyone.

Ryan called Bergeron's acts horrendous. She said he preyed upon a young family member and forced her to endure years of abuse.
