PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island — The unemployment rate in Rhode Island remained unchanged in August.

The state Department of Labor and Training said Thursday that the jobless rate was 7.7 percent in August, the same as the month before.

The state's rate is the lowest it has been since July 2008, having fallen nearly 2 percentage points in the past year.

The department says the state added 100 jobs since July, to 477,900, and the number of unemployed fell by 500, to 42,600. The state's labor force totaled 556,500, which is down by 2,000 since July.

Rhode Island's unemployment rate has been among the worst in the U.S. for years.
