5 indicted in Cook County for collecting fraudulent unemployment benefits

CHICAGO — Five people from the Chicago area have been indicted for collecting more than $159,000 in fraudulent unemployment benefits.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan and the Illinois Department of Employment Security announced the indictments on Monday. Officials say the four Chicago residents and one Calumet City resident collected the unemployment benefits even though they were employed.

Madigan says some of the defendants collected the money "for years at a time."
