Union donates $5,000 to initiative that aims to improve life in struggling McDowell County

CHARLESTON, West Virginia — A union has contributed $5,000 to an effort to help one of West Virginia's most economically depressed counties.

The Charleston Gazette (http://bit.ly/14igrIo ) reports that the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades presented the donation to Reconnecting McDowell on Tuesday.

Reconnecting McDowell is a public-private partnership working to improve life in McDowell County. The county is plagued with poor academic performance, drug abuse and poverty.

American Federation of Teachers state chapter president Christine Campbell is encouraging other unions to contribute. The AFT is leading efforts to raise money for Reconnecting McDowell.
