Guinea-Bissau interim president says elections to be this year

BISSAU, Guinea Bissau — Guinea-Bissau's interim president pledged to hold elections before the end of the year.

Interim President Manuel Serifo Mhamadjo spoke to the press Sunday after returning to the country after spending just over a month in Germany where he received medical treatment.

Nhamadjo refused to comment on the United States' arrest early this month of the army chief of staff, General Jose Americo Bubu Na Tchutu, on accusations that he and other top military officials are involved in trafficking cocaine from Latin America. Nhamadjo said he had not received information about the charges of the involvement of his officials in the drug trade.
