ND National Guard soldiers who served year of duty in Afghanistan honored in Williston

WILLISTON, North Dakota — North Dakota National Guard soldiers who served a year in Afghanistan and lost two of their comrades there have been honored.

The members of the 818th Engineer Company returned home in late March. The Guard held a "Freedom Salute" ceremony for the soldiers Sunday afternoon in Williston, where the unit is based.

The soldiers served as combat engineers in Afghanistan, clearing roadside bombs. Sgt. 1st Class Darren Linde, of Devils Lake, and Spc. Tyler Orgaard, of Bismarck, died in the line of duty last Dec. 3. A third soldier, Spc. Ian Placek, of Bismarck, was wounded.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple, Sen. John Hoeven, Sen. Heidi Heitkamp and Rep. Kevin Kramer thanked the soldiers and their families during the ceremony.
