PEORIA, Arizona — A man's dead body pulled from an irrigation canal in Peoria has been identified.

Maricopa County Sheriff's officials say the body was that of 35-year-old Rolland Lee Tockey.

His hometown wasn't immediately available Thursday.

Authorities say Tockey was arrested in February on assault and disorderly conduct charges.

Sheriff's officials say the case is being investigated as a homicide, noting that the body had wounds consistent with a gunshot.

Authorities now are trying to determine when Tockey died and how he ended up in the canal.

Two passers-by found the body in the canal around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. It was pressed up against the intake to a water-treatment plant.

Peoria police initially responded to the scene, but the sheriff's office took over the investigation because the area is a county island.
