Cops: Inglewood officer fatally shoots machete-wielding man who was damaging police cars

INGLEWOOD, California — An Inglewood police spokeswoman says an officer fatally shot a man who was using a sword or machete to damage police cars.

Police Lt. Gabriela Garcia told the Los Angeles Times on Saturday (http://lat.ms/12lryPE) that the officer shot the man around 6 p.m. after he began using the weapon to smash the windows of police cars outside the station.

Garcia says when the man moved towards the officer, the officer opened fire.

The suspect later died in surgery at a local hospital.

Police have not released the name of the officer or the man with the weapon.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave during the investigation.

Police did not immediately return a call from the AP and no other details were immediately available.
