MOBILE, Alabama — Two people have died after a small plane crashed near Mobile Regional Airport.
Mobile Airport Authority Executive Director Roger Wehner tells media outlets the plane's pilot and passenger were returning home from a charity flight late Monday night.
Air traffic control towers lost contact with the plane as it was coming in for a landing.
Authorities then responded to the report of the missing plane and began a search effort. Heavy fog hampered the search and aerial assistance was not available.
Wehner says the plane was discovered just before 2 a.m. Tuesday. He says officials created a picket line and walked in the woods during their search.
The National Transportation Safety Board has taken over the investigation.
