Authorities evicting San Diego County apartment dweller find decomposing body in suitcase

LAKESIDE, California — A woman being evicted from a San Diego County apartment led authorities to something they didn't expect — a body locked in a suitcase.

U-T San Diego ( ) says sheriff's deputies went to an apartment in Lakeside on Tuesday morning to serve an eviction notice to a woman in her 50s.

Homicide Lt. Kenneth Nelson says she told them there was a dead woman in one room.

Nelson says deputies found a suitcase that smelled of decomposition. It was turned over to the county medical examiner's office, which will try to identify the remains and determine the cause of death.

Nelson says some people recalled seeing another woman there six months to a year ago who might be the deceased.

The tenant wasn't arrested and has cooperated with investigators.
