Former Savannah-Chatham County police officer sentenced on child exploitation charges

SAVANNAH, Georgia — A retired Savannah-Chatham County police officer has been sentenced on child exploitation charges.

The Savannah Morning News reports (http://bit.ly/1tardLu ) 71-year-old Douglas Burkhalter was given a 10-year sentence Tuesday and is ordered to serve 18 months of the sentence in prison.

Burkhalter was one of nearly 100 people to be arrested in April 2013 during a statewide Georgia Bureau of Investigation probe into child pornography.

Chatham County Superior Court Chief Judge Michael Karpf ordered Burkhalter to register as a sex offender.
