NASHVILLE, Tennessee — Senior J.J. Mann scored 21 points to lead Belmont to an 87-83 victory over Lipscomb in a season opener Friday night.
Drew Windler had 16 points and was 4 for 4 from 3-point range. Reece Chamberlain added 14 points. Blake Jenkins had 10 points and led the team with nine rebounds.
The rivalry between two schools only three miles apart in Nashville produced a tight game, with the lead changing nine times.
Lipscomb's high-scorer, Carter Sanderson, finished with 21 points. Khion Sankey had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
New Lipscomb coach Casey Alexander was going against his old mentor in Belmont coach Rick Byrd. Alexander spent 16 years as Byrd's assistant at Belmont and was a standout player for the Bruins from 1992-95.
