Pittsfield man facing firearms charges in fatal shooting heads for fall trial

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — An approximate trial date has been scheduled for a Pittsfield man who fatally shot another man but is only facing firearms charges because a grand jury determined that he fired in self-defense.

The Berkshire Eagle (http://bit.ly/KcJzVu ) reports that a judge on Monday told defense lawyers and prosecutors that Kurt Hudson's trial would be scheduled in October or November after a Sept. 12 pretrial conference.

The 25-year-old Hudson is facing charges of illegal possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm with a prior conviction in connection with the Dec. 4 shooting death of Nikolas Carnute.

He has pleaded not guilty and is being held on $100,000 bail.

Authorities say the grand jury concluded that Carnute threatened Hudson with a gun, and Hudson fired as he drove away.
