La. mother, daughter barred from preparing federal tax returns

NEW ORLEANS — A Destrehan woman and her daughter have been permanently barred from preparing federal tax returns for other people.

A civil injunction order signed Monday by U.S. District Judge Helen Berrigan says Cathy Vinnett and her daughter, Lashanda Vinnett, have agreed to refrain from acting as federal tax return preparers.

The Justice Department claims the Vinnetts claimed fraudulent tax refunds on the tax returns they prepared for customers of their companies, M&C Tax Service, D&C Tax Service, River Parish Tax Professionals and Remarkable Tax Services.

The Vinnetts allegedly kept most of the money from the improper refunds for themselves without telling their customers.

The order requires them to provide the government with a list of their customers since Jan. 1, 2007.
