LePage talks education, energy and drug abuse at Capital for a Day event in Newport

NEWPORT, Maine — Gov. Paul LePage stressed education reform at his most recent Capitol for a Day event.

The Republican told a crowd at Nokomis Regional High School in Newport on Thursday there is a "disconnect" in the state's education system that has to better prepare students for the work force. He says the state has "failed miserably" in the past two decades.

The Bangor Daily News (http://bit.ly/KfY3nO ) reports that LePage said his administration has looked to other countries to see how they educate students.

Department of Education Commissioner Stephen Bowen also acknowledged the need for education reform. Bowen said the state's high school graduation rate isn't good enough.

LePage also said the state has to find a better way than wind power to cut energy costs and must stop prescription drug abuse.
