Volunteers mounting weekend search for overdue hiker in Red Rock Canyon area outside Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS — Family members are organizing a mass search in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area near Las Vegas for a missing 46-year-old man who was last seen more than a week ago.

Darrell Kirk said Friday that the effort will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday near where his brother Ronald Kirk's vehicle was found in the rugged Calico Basin area west of Las Vegas. The search will include volunteers, horses and dogs.

Ronald Kirk sent a text message Jan. 16 or Jan. 17 saying it was a warm day and he was going hiking in Las Vegas.

Family members reported him missing Sunday.

Police have said they don't suspect foul play.
