Lawsuit against Fremont School District 6 contends negligence in the death of 11-year-old girl

CHEYENNE, Wyoming — A wrongful death lawsuit stemming from the 2011 death of an 11-year-old Fremont County girl who was hit by a car after getting off a school bus will go to trial in March.

The lawsuit was filed by family members of the girl against the Fremont School District 6 and various officials. It contends the district was negligent in the death of Makayla Marie Strahle (STRAW'-lee).

On Tuesday, a federal judge dismissed some of the negligent charges but not others, including failing to provide safe bus drop-off locations for students.

The trial in the lawsuit is set for March 9 in Cheyenne federal court.

Strahle's death led the state Legislature to help districts equip buses with cameras in hopes of catching motorists who illegally pass stopped buses.
