ROYAL OAK, Michigan — It's Smashing Pumpkins time at the Detroit Zoo once again.

The zoo's inhabitants on Wednesday are to be given pumpkins and other seasonal munchies to eat, play with, tear apart, roll around in and smash.

Officials are to supply the zoo's great apes and vultures with treat-filled pumpkins.

Snow monkeys, river otters, tigers, grizzly bears, wolverines, polar bears and anteaters also are getting treats as part of the annual Halloween-themed enrichment program.

The goal is to stimulate the natural behaviors of the animals.
