Hunter shot in face on 1st day of big game season; upstate NY man wounded by shotgun slug

BUTLER, New York — Authorities say a central New York man is recovering after he was shot in the face while hunting on the first day of big game season.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office tells local media that 44-year-old Steven O'Neil of the town of Butler was hunting Saturday not far from his home near the Cayuga County border when he was hit in the jaw by a 12-gauge shotgun slug.

O'Neil was taken to Newark Wayne Community Hospital and then to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester for treatment. He was later discharged.

It's unclear who shot O'Neil and if any charges have been filed.

The case is being investigated by the sheriff's office and the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
