BATTLE GROUND, Indiana — An educational farm located within Prophetstown State Park is suspending some operations for the rest of the year because of a lack of funding, a board member said.

The Farm at Prophetstown has stopped agricultural and animal operations for 2014 but will still accept visitors, Dawn Parks, vice president of the board of directors, told the Journal & Courier (http://on.jconline.com/1oumcej ).

"We're kind of in the same position that a lot of nonprofits are in," Parks said. "Funding is really low right now."

The Farm at Prophetstown is a training farm for sustainable, low-input, horse-powered agriculture. The nonprofit operates on 125 acres leased from Prophetstown State Park near Lafayette.

The board did not foresee the declining membership and corporate sponsorships that have contributed to its financial problems, she said. Public donations also declined.

"When you add those together, it had a significant impact on our bottom line," Parks said.

The farm will close all of its operations for the year in November and reopen in the spring.

"I really want people to know that we are open for business," Parks said. "The only thing that's different is you won't see the animals."

The pigs, chickens, cows and horses already have been sent back to the organizations and farms from where they were rented.

"This is a temporary blip," Parks said. "In the spring, we will see what we can bring back."
