RICHMOND, Virginia — Dominion Virginia Power asked regulators Tuesday to approve the state's first large-scale solar project in the state, an energy proposal that would provide enough power for 5,000 homes at peak generation.

The utility, which filed the application with the State Corporation Commission, said its in-service date for the 125-acre solar farm is October 2016.

The 20-megawatt array would be built near the Remington Power Station in Fauquier County. The power project would contain approximately 90,000 photovoltaic panels.

In a written statement, Gov. Terry McAuliffe said the project would nearly double Virginia's production of solar energy.

Dominion has 344 megawatts of solar generating capacity in development, under construction or in operation in six states.

"The Remington Solar Facility marks the beginning of an exciting process with large-scale solar technology that adds emission-free generation in the commonwealth," said Thomas F. Farrell II, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Dominion Resources.

Farrell said in a written statement that the Fauquier project signals an "increasingly important role" for renewable energy in Virginia's future.

The Sierra Club's Virginia chapter said that it's pleased with the announcement, but called it "long overdue."

"Dominion has large investments in solar from Connecticut to California, and now we may finally see some of these solar jobs come to Virginia," the chapter's director, Glen Besa, said in a statement.
