Teen pleads not guilty to fatal Springfield shooting, city's 3rd homicide in a week

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts — A 17-year-old Springfield youth charged with fatally shooting a 22-year-old man last weekend has been ordered held without bail.

Christopher Montgomery pleaded not guilty to murder at his arraignment Monday in Springfield District Court, where he has been charged as an adult and his name made public.

Prosecutors say he killed Rakeem Nixon on a residential street in the city's Indian Orchard neighborhood on Sunday afternoon. Montgomery was found at his home about five hours later.

Authorities have not disclosed a motive or what led up to the shooting.

Montgomery's lawyer did not comment on the charges.

The slaying was the city's third homicide in a week, and seventh of the year.

The suspect is scheduled back in court on April 14.
