COLUMBUS, Mississippi — The city of Columbus is planning to extend the Riverwalk to Columbus Air Force Base with some state and federal help.

Mayor Robert Smith tells WTVA-TV in Tupelo (http://bit.ly/1Jxa0tW ) that the Mississippi House has voted to provide $5 million to the project. The bill is pending in the Senate.

Under the plan, the trail would extend to the south gate of Columbus Air Force Base.

The trail would pass along the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway at the Columbus Lock and Dam and pass through the Dwayne Hayes Campground.

Columbus Air Force Base has endorsed the project.

Total cost of the five-year project would be $25 million.

Officials say some money come from the Department of Defense.
