Officials release name of man killed when trench collapses in Mecklenburg County

MINT HILL, North Carolina — Authorities have released the name of a man killed when a trench collapsed in Mecklenburg County earlier this week.

The victim in the collapse Tuesday evening was identified as 46-year-rold James Mitcham of Wingate.

Mint Hill police say Mitcham was in a trench installing a new water pipe system at a house construction site when the wall collapsed. Rescue workers said the trench was 20 feet high.

No one else was hurt.

The Occupational Safety Hazard Administration will investigate the incident.
