PHOENIX — Phoenix police say a suicidal person is hospitalized in stable condition after being shot by a police officer.

Sgt. Trent Crump says police responding to a 911 call Monday night from the person's family were told the person was despondent and was damaging items and hurting himself.

Crump says officers encountered the person, who was armed with a knife, and that an officer used a stun gun to no effect.

According to Crump, another officer then shot the person once, wounding him in the torso.

The age of the person was not released, and no additional information was immediately available.
