Chicago's Joffrey Ballet hires choreographer to debut new 'Nutcracker' in 2016


CHICAGO — Chicago's Joffrey Ballet plans to debut a new version of "The Nutcracker" in 2016.

Robert Joffrey created the company's version of "The Nutcracker" in 1987 and it has run annually in Chicago for nearly 30 years. The ballet said Tuesday that is has commissioned choreographer Christopher Wheeldon to re-envision a new production of "The Nutcracker" to premiere in December 2016. It will be part of the Joffrey's 60th anniversary.

This year's Joffrey presentation of "The Nutcracker" will be the final staging for Robert Joffrey's version.
