Investigators probe suspicious fire near South Bend after body found in burning pole barn

SOUTH BEND, Indiana — Investigators are trying to determine the identity of a person found dead in a burning pole barn near South Bend and the cause of the fire and another fire at a nearby house.

Firefighters were called to the property just south of the city about 2 a.m. Monday and found the remains of a body in the barn. The cause of death remained undetermined following an autopsy Monday. The St. Joseph County prosecutor's office says DNA testing will be conducted to determine the identity of the victim.

Tim Corbett, commander of the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit, said the body was so badly burned that authorities couldn't determine the gender, race of age of the victim.

Authorities said the causes of the fires are considered suspicious.
