Police investigating fatal hit-and-run in western New York; man killed in rural town

NEWSTEAD, New York — Authorities are investigating a fatal hit-and-run accident in a rural western New York town.

The Erie County Sheriff's Office tells local media that a passing motorist called dispatchers shortly after midnight Sunday to report a man lying in a road in the town of Newstead, 15 miles east of Buffalo. Deputies say 38-year-old Francis Meldrum of Corfu apparently was walking along the road when he was hit by a vehicle that left the scene.

The road remained closed until after dawn as police investigated the accident.
