LANCASTER, California — A Southern California man who said God told him to kill his elderly mother has been sentenced to 15 years to life in state prison.

Prosecutors say 49-year-old Shelton Bradley of Lancaster was sentenced Thursday. He pleaded no contest earlier this month to second-degree murder.

Bradley was arrested in December 2013 after his brother called police to report finding their 73-year-old mother with her upper body in an open oven.

Bradley reportedly told detectives that God ordered him to kill and burn his mother, Rosie Manual, because she was a witch.

Bradley strangled her and tried to put her in the oven.
