Braves shake up bullpen by cutting 2 relievers following 4-0 loss to Phillies in 10 innings


ATLANTA — A 10th-inning meltdown set the stage for a postgame shake-up of Atlanta's bullpen.

allowed three runs without getting any outs as the Braves wasted another strong start by in Sunday's 4-0, 10-inning loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.

replaced Masset with the bases loaded and gave up 's tiebreaking sacrifice fly.

Following the game, Masset and Eveland were designated for assignment. The Braves recalled right-hander from Gwinnett and selected the contract of right-hander from the Triple-A farm team.

This marked only the 10th time since the Braves moved to Atlanta for the 1966 season that the team did not score in an extra-inning game.

"He did his job," Braves manager said of Miller. "Nine times out of 10, we win that game. ... There's always one guy on the staff that doesn't get any run support."

Miller gave up seven hits and struck out eight in 6 1-3 innings, lowering his ERA to 2.07. He is 0-3 in eight starts since a May 17 win at Miami despite a 2.80 ERA in that span.

"Obviously a tough loss," Miller said. "Would have loved to have had this one."

singled off Masset (2-2) leading off the 10th and broke for second when lined a single into left field for his third hit. Masset walked Mikael Franco, loading the bases, and Howard's fly ball to right field off Eveland, a left-hander, scored Herrera.

"I knew they were going to bring in a lefty in that situation," Howard said. "I just wanted to hit a pitch up and try to put it in play, hopefully to the outfield."

Philadelphia's allowed six hits in seven innings with no walks and six strikeouts.

Franco singled leading off the eighth and was running from second base when right fielder charged toward the infield to make a diving catch of a weak fly ball hit by off . Franco scrambled back to second base before Asche grounded out to Simmons.


Philadelphia has been swept in seven series, the most in the majors.


Atlanta closed its clubhouse following the game to make the roster moves. Vizcaino and Carpenter will be with the team for Monday night's game at Milwaukee.

The hard-throwing Vizcaino was suspended for the first 80 games for a positive test for the performance-enhancing substance Stanozolol. He was acquired from the Chicago Cubs in an offseason trade for 2B .

Carpenter signed as a minor league free agent on Jan. 17. He was 1-2 with a 5.23 ERA in 30 games with the Angels from 2012-14.


Phillies: OF has what he says is a minor right hamstring injury that kept him out of the starting lineup for the third straight day. He could return to the lineup on Monday at the Dodgers.

Braves: LHP , who left his last start against Washington with cramping and dehydration, is expected to take his next turn Tuesday at Milwaukee.


Phillies: RHP , whose only win came on May 17 against Arizona, will try to stop his four-game losing streak when he faces the Los Angeles Dodgers and RHP on Monday night.

Braves: Rookie RHP , coming off a win over Washington, will face Brewers RHP in the opener of a seven-game trip.
