SAVANNAH, Georgia — Two deputies are on paid administrative leave while authorities investigate the death of an inmate at the Chatham County jail.

Authorities said Cpls. Maxine Evans and Jason Kenny were placed on leave for inappropriate actions during the booking and detention of 22-year-old Matthew Ajibade.

The Florida Times-Union (http://bit.ly/14GNQmH ) reports the 22-year-old artist had bipolar disorder. He died after he was placed in a restraining chair following a Jan. 1 arrest. Jail officials said Ajibade became combative, injuring three deputies. He was placed in an isolation cell.

Police arrested Ajibade for allegedly assaulting a woman. Attorney Mark O'Mara, who represents Ajibade's family, said Ajibade should have been taken to a hospital.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is examining the death and performed an autopsy.
