Prosecutors: Man shot to death in Newark neighborhood; motive under investigation

NEWARK, New Jersey — Authorities say a man found shot in a Newark neighborhood has died from his injuries.

Essex County prosecutors say 19-year-old city resident Shyheim Rawls was found shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday by Newark police officers responding to reports of shots fired in the 100 block of Avon Avenue. He was taken to a hospital, but died there a short time later.

No other injuries were reported in the incident. Further details on the shooting were not disclosed, including how many assailants may have been involved or what type of weapon was used.

A motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
