Father, son rescued from Winooski River after losing canoe paddle, sought refuge on island


MORETOWN, Vermont — A father and his 12-year-old son from Illinois are fine after they were rescued from an island in Vermont's Winooski River after losing a canoe paddle.

State police said Andrew Schoneman of Western Springs and his son started canoeing about 1 p.m. Sunday. They lost a paddle in a rapid at about 3:30 p.m., decided to seek refuge on an island, and called for assistance.

Rescuers brought them ashore at about 5:15 p.m. They weren't hurt.
