MALVERNE, New York — Authorities say a 52-year-old volunteer Long Island firefighter killed while hunting in upstate New York was fatally shot by a friend.
A department spokesman tells Newsday (http://bit.ly/1aqsIQs ) that Charles Bruce was with a group that included members of the Malverne fire department. The shooter had once worked there.
But Dave Gildea says the hunting trip wasn't a fire department outing. He declined to identify the friend.
Prosecutors say that at this time the shooting appeared to be accidental.
The men were hunting in the Otsego County town of Westford on Saturday. Bruce died at the scene.
Prosecutors say Bruce was walking through the woods and the shooter was in a tree.
Regular deer hunting season began in New York's southern zone on Saturday.
