Easley-born Army private dies after vehicle attacked by explosive device in Afghanistan

FORT STEWART, Georgia — The Department of Defense says an Army private from South Carolina has died following an attack in Afghanistan.

Military officials announced Monday that 20-year-old Pfc. Barrett L. Austin of Easley died April 21 in Landstuhl, Germany, of injuries sustained when his vehicle was attacked by an enemy improvised explosive device in Wardak Province on April 17.

Auston was assigned to the 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Georgia
