Urawa Reds beat Shimizu S-Pulse 4-1 to maintain lead in J-League standings


TOKYO — Urawa Reds coasted to a 4-1 win at Shimizu S-Pulse on Saturday to maintain first place as the J-League resumed after a two-week international break.

Ryota Moriwaki and Tadanari Lee scored first-half goals and Tomoaki Makino widened the lead in the 72nd with his third goal of the season.

Yasuhiro Hiraoka scored his team's only goal in the 76th but deflected into his own net at the end of stoppage time to cap a miserable afternoon for S-Pulse, winless in its last four matches.

Reds improved to 47 points from 23 games, four points ahead of Kawasaki Frontale which thrashed last-placed Tokushima Vortis 4-0.

Takashi Usami scored in the 32nd minute as Gamba Osaka beat defending champion Sanfrecce Hiroshima 1-0 while Omiya Ardija defeated Kashima Antlers 2-1.

Also, third-placed Sagan Tosu was beaten 1-0 by Ventforet Kofu to fall six points off the lead.

Kenyu Sugimoto and Ryo Nagai scored in a 2-0 win for Cerezo Osaka against Kashiwa Reysol while goals from Kengo Kawamata and Kensuke Nagai gave Nagoya Grampus a 2-0 win over Yokohama F Marinos.

Vissel Kobe and FC Tokyo finished 1-1 and Albirex Niigata edged Vegalta Sendai 1-0.
