Johnson wins special election for Birmingham legislative seat

Share/Save/Bookmark

MONTGOMERY, Alabama — Democrat Anthony 'Alann' Johnson has won a special election to fill the House of Representatives seat left vacant by the death of Birmingham Rep. Demetrius Newton Sr.

AL.com (http://tinyurl.com/odchlkh ) reported Tuesday that Johnson won the race for House District 53 over Republican William Casey.

Johnson had 320 votes to Casey's 150 with 23 of 24 precincts reporting.

Johnson will not serve long, however. The redistricting plan that will be used in the November election moves House District 53 from Birmingham.

There are two meeting days remaining in this legislative session.
