Development at Indianapolis Star site to be named for Pulliam family that ran newspaper

INDIANAPOLIS — The current headquarters of Indiana's largest newspaper will be turned into a mixed-use apartment project named for its longtime owners.

The Indianapolis Star reports (http://indy.st/ZYM2wc ) The Whitsett Group has finalized its purchase agreement for the four-acre property with Virginia-based Gannett Co. The terms weren't disclosed.

The new development will be named Pulliam Square in honor of the family that ran the newspaper for 56 years. Eugene C. Pulliam bought the Star in 1944 and added The Indianapolis News four years later.

The Star has occupied its downtown building since 1907. President and Publisher Karen Crotchfelt says the newspaper is moving to a new location that better suits its size and needs in a digital media era.

Pulliam's grandson, Russ Pulliam, called the development's name "a very nice honor."
