VANCOUVER, Washington — Police shot and killed a man overnight in Vancouver.

Officers responded about 11 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a disturbance between a man and a woman at the Alder Creek Apartments where the man had started a fire.

Officers found the man in the apartment parking lot armed with a gun. Police say he refused commands to put down the weapon and was shot. He died at the scene.

Police say the fire engulfed the apartment unit before it was extinguished. Neighbors were evacuated but no one else was hurt. Two adults and two children were displaced.

One resident told The Columbian (http://bit.ly/1yXAbR8 ) she heard about five shots.

Police have crime tape around the apartment building Wednesday morning and are limiting who can come and go during their investigation.
