VANCOUVER, Washington — Vancouver, Washington, police officers responding to a report of a fire and domestic disturbance at an apartment complex fatally shot a man who they say refused to drop what appeared to be an AR-15 style weapon.

Police spokeswoman Kim Kapp said Wednesday that the gun was later determined to be a replica.

The man killed late Tuesday night was not immediately identified pending notification of relatives. He died at the scene.

Kapp says officers had been advised that a man had set an apartment unit on fire, was believed to be armed and had brandished a weapon at a woman in the apartment complex parking lot. She says five officers encountered the man in the parking lot, he refused commands to put the gun down and the officers fired.

All five officers are on leave while the shooting is investigated.

No one was injured in the fire. Kapp says the man was a guest of the apartment residents and no one else was in the unit when the fire began.

The police spokeswoman says the apartment was heavily damaged.
