Utah judge rules state must pay Democrats attorney fees in redistricting battle

SALT LAKE CITY — A judge has sided with the Utah Democratic Party and says the state must pay the organization's attorney fees related to a lengthy court battle over redistricting records.

The Democrats sued the Republican-controlled Legislature last September for 16,000 pages of documents from the 2012 redistricting process.

Democrats filed a records request in 2011 for the documents and paid an initial fee of $5,000 for some of the records. Party officials were then told the rest of the records would cost an additional $9,250.

Democrats balked at the payment and sued for the documents, which were released in November

The Salt Lake Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/11VZ8Mf ) a state judge ruled on the fees Tuesday.

Democratic Party Chairman Jim Dabakis says in a statement the ruling is a "victory for transparency" and open government.
