Hawaii County police: Officer shot at stolen truck when it sped toward officers; no injuries

HILO, Hawaii — An officer shot at a stolen pickup truck when it started speeding toward officers in Mountain View, Hawaii County police said.

Police said they are conducting a criminal investigation and an internal administrative review.

Puna patrol officers were attempting to stop the truck Tuesday as it traveled south on Volcano Highway, just south of the Kulani Road intersection in Mountain View. One of the officers fired one shot toward the vehicle when it sped toward them in a "threatening manner," police said.

The truck continued south on the highway, toward Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. There were no injuries reported.

The rush-hour incident closed a lane of the busy highway, also known as Route 11, Hawaii Tribune-Herald ( ) reported.

Police are asking for the public's help in locating the truck. It's described as a black 1989 Nissan single-cab pickup with license plate ZBC 027. It also is slightly lifted, with oversized sports tires and a mesh tailgate. There's a red, yellow and green sticker on the driver's side rear window.

Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives are conducting a criminal investigation. The Office of Professional Standards, the department's internal affairs unit, is conducting an administrative review. Police said that's standard practice for any officer-involved shooting.
