Friend of Boston Marathon bombing suspects gets new lawyer to defend him against lying charges

BOSTON — A federal judge has approved a new lawyer for a friend of the brothers suspected of carrying out the Boston Marathon bombings.

Khairullozhon Matanov (hy-ROO'-luh-zhahn MAH'-tuh-nahf), a cab driver from Quincy, is accused of deleting information from his computer and lying to the FBI about contact he had with Dzhokhar (joh-HAHR') and Tamerlan Tsarnaev (tsahr-NEYE'-ehv), including dinner at a restaurant the night of the bombings.

Defense lawyer Edward Hayden said Matanov asked him to withdraw. A judge on Thursday approved the appointment of another attorney, Paul Glickman.

Three people were killed and more than 260 were injured in the 2013 attack. Matanov isn't charged with participating in the bombings or knowing about them in advance.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is scheduled to go on trial in January. Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed in a shootout with police.
