Kentucky Democratic congressman accuses Congress of 'cowardice' on gun issue

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky — A Kentucky lawmaker is accusing Congress of showing "cowardice" by failing to take action aimed at curbing gun violence.

The Courier-Journal ( ) reports that U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth said in a House floor speech this week that moments of silence by Congress for gun-violence victims aren't enough. The Louisville Democrat said it's time for action by Congress to prevent gun violence.

Yarmuth's speech came a day after a student was killed, a teacher injured and the teenage gunman killed himself at an Oregon high school. Yarmuth said the Oregon tragedy was the 74th school shooting since 20 children and six adults were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut in 2012.

Yarmuth and other Democrats have tried without success to pressure Republican House leaders to consider bills to toughen gun laws.
