SC Air National Guard F-16 jets flying air defense exercise over Myrtle Beach region

MCENTIRE JOINT NATIONAL GUARD BASE, South Carolina — Jets with the South Carolina Air National Guard are taking to the skies over the Myrtle Beach area.

Senior Master Sgt. Ed Snyder says Wednesday's activity is a training exercise and should not cause any alarm.

Snyder says the exercise includes pilots and crews from the 169th Fighter Wing from McEntire Joint National Guard Base near Eastover.

They may be seen escorting a single-engine aircraft belonging to the Civil Air Patrol in the midday hours.

Snyder says the exercise is coordinated with the Federal Aviation Administration. It helps train Guard members on airspace defense tactics.

The unit has been serving as part of the nation's North American Aerospace Defense Command since the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
