19-year-old Memphis mother indicted on murder charge in death of toddler put under mattress

MEMPHIS, Tennessee — A 19-year-old West Tennessee woman accused of killing her toddler son by putting him under a mattress to discipline him has been indicted on a first-degree murder charge.

Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich's office said in a news release that Raven Campbell was indicted Tuesday and being held without bond in the death of 2-year-old Jermyle Campbell. Online jail records do not indicate whether Campbell is represented by a lawyer.

The release said an autopsy showed the boy died June 13 of dehydration and hyperthermia and had bite marks and scratches on his body.

Investigators said the mother put the child under the mattress for 20 or 30 minutes and that when she moved the mattress, he wasn't breathing.

Campbell was charged with first-degree murder in the perpetration of aggravated child abuse and neglect and aggravated child endangerment.
